Master of Science - Specializing in Astronomy

Objectives of the program

The program will allow the student to complete an academic foundation in Astrophysics to then continue into a PhD program or to a professional occupation related to Astronomy. The program is open to candidates from all nationalities and backgrounds.

During the tenure of the course the student will have access to data obtained using world-class facilities located in northern Chile. Often, the student will get a chance to participate in the observing runs for the acquisition of such data.

Plan of study

To enter our Postgraduate Program in Astronomy at Departament of Astronomy (DAS) a candidate must have a Bachelor in Physics, Astronomy or a related subject.

The Master program consists of 3 full-time semesters. The students have to approve 4 courses, of which at least two have to be from the following list:

  • Radiative Processes
  • Galaxies
  • Galactic Structure
  • Observational Astronomy

Additionally, during their first year the students have to dedicate at least 25 per cent of their time to a research project.

To graduate, the students have to successfully complete their thesis. This must correspond to an original research project contributing to the advancement in an area of Astronomy.
