Halley in January 1984

This picture is a composite of 12 CCD frame, obtained with the Danish 1.5 m telescope on January 27-30, 1984, when Halley was 1200 million km from the Sun, i.e. well beyond the orbit oj Jupiter. These observations were made in orden to investigate whether a ratation period for the nucleus could be determined from brightness variations. In theory, this should be possible when the comet is so far from the Sun, that no evaporation from the nucleus has taken place and the nucleus is there-fore not yet enveloped in obscuring dust and gas. However, although the measured magnitude did vary by more than 1m during these four nights of observations, no rotation period could be determined unambiguosly (cf. west and Pedersen, 1984, Astronomy and Astrophysics, 138, L9)

Esta iamgen es un compuesto del bastidor del CCD 12, obtenido con el telescopio Danés de 1,5 m el 27-30 Enero de 1984, cuando Halley estaba a 1.200 millones de kilómetros del Sol, es decir, más allá de la órbita de Júpiter. Estas observaciones fueron hechas para investigar si el período de ratación del núcleo podría determinar la variación de brillo. En teoría, esto debe ser posible cuando el cometa esta lejos del Sol, ninguna señal ha ocurrido de la evaporación del núcleo y éste por lo tanto todavía no se envuelve en polvo y gas que lo obscurecen. Sin embargo, aunque la magnitud media varió por más de 1m durante estas cuatro noches de observaciones, ningún período de la rotación podría ser determinado, (cf. oeste y Pedersen, 1984, astronomía y astrofísica, 138, L9)
