Comet Halley and the Milky Way

This beautiful colour picture of Comet Halley was obtained on March 21 by R. Häfner. His Minolta XD7 camera with a MD Rokkor 1:1.7/50mm lens was attached to a mounting provided by the Ruhr University of Bockum. The exposure time was 70 min on Perutz 100 ASA film. After processing the film was recopied in the ESO photographic laboratory in order to correct the colour balance and better bring out the faint details. On this date, the comet was situated near the Milky Way band in the constellation Sagittarius. The distance from earth was 118 million kilometres and from the sun 151 million kilometres. The long, straight ion tail is well visible but the light from its outermost parts is lost in the glow of the bright clouds in the Milky Way.

Este cuadro hermoso del color del cometa Halley fue obtenido el 21 de Marzo por R. Häfner. Su cámara fotográfica de Minolta XD7 con una lente de MD Rokkor 1:1.7/50m m fue unida a un montaje proporcionado por la Universidad de Ruhr de Bockum. El tiempo de la exposición era 70 minutos en la película de Perutz 100 ASA. Después de procesar la película fue reproducida en el laboratorio fotográfico de ESO para corregir el equilibrio del color y pone en evidencia mejor los detalles débiles. Esta fecha, el cometa fue situado cerca de la Vía Láctea la constelación de Sagitario. La distancia de la Tierra estaba a 118 millones de kilómetros y 151 millones de kilómetros del Sol. La cola larga, recta del ion es visible pero la luz de sus piezas exteriores se pierde en el resplandor de las nubes brillantes de la Vía Láctea.
