SUPERNOVA 2008il in ESO 355-G4.
G. Pignata, J. Maza, M. Hamuy, R. Antezana, L. Gonzalez, P. Gonzalez, P. Lopez, S. Silva, G. Folatelli, D. Iturra, R. Cartier, and F. Forster, Universidad de Chile; B. Conuel, Wesleyan University; and D. Reichart, K. Ivarsen, A. Crain, D. Foster, M. Nysewander, and A. LaCluyze, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, on behalf of the CHASE project, report the discovery of an apparent supernova (mag approximately 16.5 +/- 0.2) on an unfiltered image taken on Dec. 27.14 UT with the 0.41-m 'PROMPT 3' telescope located at Cerro Tololo. The new object is located at R.A. = 2h17m53s.07 +/- 0".1, Decl. = -34°47'53".4 +/- 0".1 (equinox 2000), which is about 23".1 west 18".9 north of the center of the galaxy ESO 355-G4. Nothing is visible at this position on archival images taken on Dec. 12.08 and 22.19 (limiting mag 18.0). M. Stritzinger, Las Campanas Observatory (LCO), on behalf of the Carnegie Supernova Project, reports that a spectrum (range 380-920 nm) of 2008il, obtained on Dec. 28.1 UT with the du Pont telecope (+ WFCCD) at LCO, shows it to be a young type-II supernova. Adopting a host-galaxy recession velocity of 6236 km/s (Paturel et al. 2003, A.Ap. 412, 57) for the host galaxy, H_alpha and H_beta are measured to be blue-shifted by roughly 15000 and 12000 km/s, respectively. With use of the "SuperNova IDentification" program (Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024), he finds 2008il to be very similar to SN 1999em and SN 2004et around a week past explosion.

SUPERNOVA 2008ik.
G. Pignata, J. Maza, M. Hamuy, R. Antezana, L. Gonzalez, P. Gonzalez, P. Lopez, S. Silva, G. Folatelli, D. Iturra, R. Cartier, and F. Forster, Universidad de Chile; B. Conuel, Wesleyan University; and D. Reichart, K. Ivarsen, A. Crain, D. Foster, M. Nysewander, and A. LaCluyze, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, on behalf of the CHASE project, report the discovery of an apparent supernova (mag approximately 17.6 +/- 0.4) on an R-band image taken on Dec. 17.14 UT with the 0.41-m 'PROMPT 4' telescope located at Cerro Tololo. The new object, which is also present at mag approximately 17.5 +/- 0.4 on images taken on Dec. 19.09 and 20.06, is located at R.A. = 3h36m09s.54 +/- 0".1, Decl. = -35o13'00".7 +/- 0".1 (equinox 2000), which is about 2".0 west and 1".3 north of the center of the apparent host galaxy. Nothing is visible at this position on archival images taken on Nov. 18.10 and 25.11 (limiting mag 18.0). M. Stritzinger, P. Lira, and G. Pignata, on behalf of the Carnegie Supernova Project, report that a spectrum (range 380-920 nm) of 2008ik, obtained on Dec. 19.2 UT with the du Pont telecope (+ WFCCD) at Las Campanas Observatory, shows it to be a type-Ic supernova around maximum light. Comparison with a library of supernovae spectra via the "Supernova Identification" program (Blondin and Tonry 2007, Ap.J. 666, 1024) reveals that 2008ik is similar to supernova 2004aw (Taubenberger et al. 2006, MNRAS 371, 1459) at one day past maximum. Adopting a host-galaxy recession velocity of 19390 km/s (Dringkwater et al. 2000, A.Ap. 355, 900), the Ca II triplet (rest 866.2 nm) is measured to be blue-shifted by roughly 13000 km/s.

LaCluyze, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, on behalf of the CHASE project, report the discovery of an apparent supernova (mag approximately 12.8 +/- 0.2) on a Luminance-filter image taken on Oct. 8.27 UT with the 0.41-m 'PROMPT 2' telescope at Cerro Tololo. The new object is located at R.A. = 4h08m24s.68 +/- 0".1, Decl. = -47o53'47".4 +/- 0".1 (equinox 2000), which is about 5".4 east 2".0 north of center of the galaxy NGC 1527. Additional magnitudes for 2008ge: Aug. 21.24, [17.5; 28.33, [17.0; Sept. 8.23, 12.4 +/- 0.3; 16.35, 12.4 +/- 0.3; 25.33, 12.4 +/- 0.3; Oct. 2.23, 12.4 +/- 0.3. The magnitudes are from aperture photometry and therefore highly contaminated by the light of the host galaxy.

SUPERNOVA 2008ff in PGC 64319.
GT. G. Tan (Mt. Claremont, Western Australia) reports his discovery of an apparent supernova on 20-s CCD images taken on Aug. 29.51 and Sept. 1.52 UT with a Celestron C9.25 Schmidt-Cassegrain f/10 reflector (+ 0.63x reducer + Artemis ART-285 CCD camera + Schuler V filter; image scale 2" per pixel); he measured mag 15.5 on the second date, along with the following precise position for 2008ft: R.A. = 20h13m59s.96, Decl. = -44°21'07".8 (equinox 2000.0), which is 39" east and 1" south (clearly separated) of the nucleus of the galaxy PGC 64319 (ESO 284-G32); nothing is visible at this position on a U.K. Schmidt Telescope Unit plate from 1995 May 31 (limiting red mag roughly 18, via USNO-A2.0 catalogue reference stars). This same object has been independently discovered at mag approximately 15.1 +/- 0.1 by G. Pignata, J. Maza, M. Hamuy, R. Antezana, L. Gonzalez, P. Gonzalez, P. Lopez, S. Silva, G. Folatelli, D. Iturra, R. Cartier, and F. Forster, Universidad de Chile; and D. Reichart, K. Ivarsen, A. Crain, D. Foster, M. Nysewander, and A. LaCluyze, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, on two R-band images taken via the CHASE project on Sept. 18.03 UT with the 0.41-m 'PROMPT 5' telescope located at Cerro Tololo. They measure the position of 2008ft as R.A. = 20h13m59s.89 +/- 0".1, Decl. = -44°21'05".5 +/- 0".1 (equinox 2000), which is about 39".0 east and 1".3 south from the nucleus of the galaxy ESO 284-G32. Nothing is visible at this position on archival images taken on July 9.22 and Aug. 1.16 (limiting mag 18.0). Following posting on the Central Bureau's unconfirmed-objects webpage, C. Jacques and E. Pimentel, Belo Horizonte, Brazil, report that a 60-s unfiltered CCD image (limiting mag 17.0) of 2008ft, taken on Sept. 25.11 UT with a 30-cm f/3.0 Schmidt-Cassegrain reflector at the CEAMIG-REA Observatory, yields mag 16.0 and position end figures 59s.88, 05".4. Nothing is visible at this position on a Digitized Sky Survey image from 1995 May 31 (limiting red mag 19.5).
