Foster, M. Nysewander, and A. LaCluyze, University of
North Carolina at Chapel Hill, on behalf of the CHASE
project, report the discovery of an apparent supernova
(mag approximately 14.8 +/- 0.1) on an unfiltered image
taken on Jan. 13.26 UT with the 0.41-m 'PROMPT 3' telescope
located at Cerro Tololo. The new object, which was confirmed
at mag approximately 14.7 on Jan. 14.10, is located
at R.A. = 10h05m21s.05 +/- 0".1, Decl. = -34°13'21".0
+/- 0".1 (equinox 2000.0), which is about 24".8
west and 9".1 south of the center of the galaxy
NGC 3120. Nothing is visible at this position on archival
images taken on Dec. 24.22 (limiting mag 18.0) and Nov.
14.31 (limiting mag 18.5). The type-II supernova 1999ca
also appeared in this galaxy (cf. IAUCs 7158, 7160,
7161).
