SUPERNOVA 2009K IN NGC 1620
G. Pignata, J. Maza, M. Hamuy, R. Antezana, L. Gonzalez, P.
Gonzalez, P. Lopez, S. Silva, G. Folatelli, D. Iturra, R.
Cartier, F. Forster, and S.
Marchi, Universidad de Chile; B. Conuel, Wesleyan University;
and D. Reichart, K. Ivarsen, A. Crain, D. Foster, M. Nysewander,
and A. LaCluyze, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill,
on behalf of the CHASE project, report the discovery of an
apparent supernova (mag approximately 14.9 +/- 0.1) on a "Luminance"-filtered
image taken on Jan. 14.07 UT with the 0.41-m 'PROMPT 2' telescope
located at Cerro Tololo. The new object, which was confirmed
in a similar image taken on Jan. 15.06 at mag approximately
15.0 +/- 0.1, is located at R.A. = 4h36m36s.77 +/- 0".1,
Decl. = -0°08'35".6 +/- 0".1 (equinox 2000), which
is about 8".7 west and 1".5 north of the center
of the galaxy NGC 1620. Nothing is visible at this position
on archival images taken on 2008 Dec. 18.14 and 2009 Jan.
11.08 (limiting mag 18.0).
